Project 2130 | House Simbithi No. 1

  • Designed on a large sloping site within a prestigious secure estate on the North Coast of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa, the brief asked for a predominantly single level home. In order to satisfy the clients requirements the house was set into the landscape and orientated towards the view of the golf course and due north in order to receive the best light within the Southern Hemisphere. A strategically placed landscaped lightwell has been introduced to to the side of the house allowing light to enter the sunken portion of the home whilst creating a separation of the building from the retaining wall to reduce an waterproofing complications. The passage that abuts this courtyard is fully glazed allowing for maximum appreciation of this space and for light to enter. The stone clad retaining wall to the back of this courtyard space has a low linear water feature in front to additionally activate the space with the soothing sounds of running water. An entry courtyard doubles as a place of reprieve in times on inclement weather. A limited palette of natural materials has been adopted and on the lowest portion of the site a fire pit and alfresco dining deck nestles itself below the trees and enjoys distant views. All private bedroom spaces flank the main living space and are protected from solar heat gain by sliding timber screens which add a layer of privacy.
